Learning Objectives:

I can...

  • examine multiple perspectives in literature
  • consider two sides of a personal story

Today I will collect Class Notebooks and Independent Reading Notebooks.

Opening:
1. Review your Short Story Circle Map

2. Add "Descriptive Details" if it is not already there.

  • Why are they entertaining to a reader?
  • What is hard for a writer to capture with words?
  • How can you use a comparison to help describe something a reader might not know much about?

3. Preview page 106.

  • 1st Person POV (what have we read?)
  • 3rd Person POV (what have we read?)
4. Complete the "Before Reading" quickwrite in your journal.  Call it "Flipped Quickwrite: 10/14"

5. Discuss in small groups.

Work Period:
6. Read independently.

  • Mark the text by highlighting what each character thinks of the other.
  • Use the "My Notes" area to describe how each character feels about the other.
7. If you finish in the class period, let me know, and I'll sign your new "Independent Reading Log #7" for today's reading.  Otherwise, I'll sign it tomorrow if you have read and marked the entire text.

Closing:

7. Tonight: Locate 2-3 EVENTS in the narratives that both characters describe - from his or her own point of view.

  • Put the same # next to the paired event
  • Think about how each person describes the event
  • What is different about each person's perspective on the event
