I can...
  • understand methods of characterization: appearance, action, dialogue
  • examine dialogue
  • practice oral fluency
  • reinforce the elements of a short story
Opening:
1. Discuss Metacognitive Markers in the remainder of the text.

2. With a partner, go back into the story and:

  • mark the text by CIRCLING physical descriptions of the characters' appearance
  • try to visualize and SKETCH the characters in the "My Notes" section
  • discuss the inferences you made doing the HW

Work Period:
3. Continue to review the text with a partner.  Look at the actions of Roger and Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones.

  • Try to find 3-4 actions by each character
  • Paraphrase the actions on the left column on page 121
  • Describe the inference you make about each character based on his or her actions.
4. When you are done, let me know.  I will assign you a "Part" of the novel to practice reading with your partner.

5. Highlight each character's dialogue with a different color.

6. Complete #3 - focus on what the character's dialogue reveals about him or her.

Closing:
