Learning Focus:
I can…
  • invent characters
  • determine a setting
  • determine internal and external conflicts
  • invent a plot structure
  • choose a point of view for the story
  • draft a short story by Monday
Opening:
1. With your partner, share your "Hook" that you created last night.

Work Period:
2. Examine Steps 1-4 in SpringBoard on pages 128-131
  • Examine your short story ideas:
    • Look through
      • your working folder
      • your class journal
      • SpringBoard
*What ideas have you had that can be transformed into an entertaining short story?
*What ideas relate to the theme of change?

3. Once you have a focus for your story, determine who your main character, or protagonist, is.  Answer #2 and #3 in SpringBoard.

4. Work through the prewriting graphic organizers on page 129, 130, and 131.  This will help you imagine the following:
  • Characters
    • apprearance
    • actions
    • details
  • Conflict(s)
    • external
    • internal
  • Setting
    • sensory details
      • what the setting looks like
      • the setting's sounds
      • texture of things in the surroundings
      • scents (or odors!)
  • Plot Structure
    • work through the entire story, starting with the conflict and the climax.
      • What does the plot all build toward so that the conflict is resolved by the end?

Closing:
5. How is your progress?  What will you accomplish tomorrow so that you can write the draft this weekend?
