I can...
- make a plan for improving on a narrative writing
- recognize and apply key elements of narrative writing
Opening:
1. Hand out folders and Short Stories2. Review notes and markings on your Short Story
3. On the Revision Form, include areas of weakness and concern in the three sections:
- Organization/Progression
- Development of Ideas
- Use of Language/Conventions
4. Write out your "Plan" for the next Narrative you write (EA 1: Writing a Personal Narrative about an Event that Changed Me)
Work Period:
5. In your small group, Jigsaw a scene from The Lion King
- setting
- character feelings
- dialogue
6. After the second viewing, refine your notes so that you know what to share with those who took notes on the other pieces of the puzzle.
7. Regroup:
- Everyone should have a complete graphic organizer on page 12.
8. Share chronological ordering in your new group. Make sure you all agree.
9. Independently, take 10 minutes and tell the story of the Elephant Graveyard from a 1st Person POV… (write at the bottom of page 13)
10. Review transitions, or signal words, that indicate chronology, and add sensory details on page 14…add examples of sensory details from life
Closing:
11. Practice revision marks on page 15.
- Put at asterisk (*) where a transition might fit to make it flow more smoothly
- Underline or highlight sentences that need more sensory details
- Add a check mark in places where dialogue might make the scene more vivid
HW: Mark up your Rough Draft of the Graveyard Scene with the same revision marks.
