Learning Objectives:
I can...
- Connect the idea of change to personal experience
- Explore the concepts of conflict and resolution to real world changes
Opening:
1. Discuss page 78 in SpringBoard
a. What was the problem of obstacle that you faced?
b. How was the conflict resolved? How did you work out the problem?
2. In your classroom journal, respond to the following quickwrite:
- Changes create conflict. What did it take for you to overcome the obstacle that the change created?
- What did you learn from that experience?
- Use the personal experience you focused on last night to help you explain.
I've found that it is always important for me to work out my own problems because sometimes others are really affected negatively by changes I've made. For example, when I was in fourth grade I decided I wanted to become really serious about gymnastics. Becoming "really serious" meant that I would have to go to 2 hour practices four nights a week to learn the six "all-around" routines. This was a huge change in commitment for me. This also created huge problems in my family. My mom was especially effected because often times the practices went long and she'd have to wait in the car at pick-up time, wondering what was taking so long. Not only that, pick-up time was right around dinner time. So a late pick up meant a burnt dinner and a grumpy mom! I finally came to the realization that this change in schedule was not worth all the problems it was causing at home. So, at the end of the season I decided to quit gymnastics and focus on other things because the effects of my change were so negative. Besides that, I was never destined for the Olympics anyway!
3. Discuss/Review the Working Folder activity at the bottom of page 78.
- A graphic can be many things:
- Illustration
- Thinking Map
- Storyboard
- Comic Strip
Work Period:
4. In color, Create the two sides of YOU.
- Think back to the change you have focused on...
- What were you like before the change?
- What are you like now that the change has occurred?
Note: If you'd like to use WHITE PAPER and glue it onto the construction paper, then just ask.
Closing:
7. This "divider" you are creating is due tomorrow - and will go into your folder to help keep Unit 2 work organized.
